Father Held Hospital at Gunpoint to Save His Son's Life
Father pulls a gun on doctors to stop them turning off his son's life support. His son survives and fully recovers

By the time George Pickering II walked into Tomball Regional Medical Center in Pinehurst, Texas, the hospital had already moved past saving his son. George Pickering III had suffered a massive stroke, been declared brain dead, and placed on a terminal wean — a process of slowly removing life support. An organ donation company had already been notified.
What happened next would land the father in prison and his son back on his feet.
A Father at the Bedside
Pickering entered the hospital armed with a 9mm handgun. When his other son tried to disarm him, he produced a second weapon and barricaded himself inside his son's hospital room, refusing to let the process continue. The hospital went into lockdown. A SWAT team was called in.
For three hours, negotiators worked to end the standoff. But inside that room, something was happening that no one had anticipated.
What the SWAT Team's Doctors Saw
When the SWAT team sent their own medical personnel into the critical care room, they did not find a brain-dead patient. According to the family's attorney, Phoebe Smith, those doctors were stunned by what they observed. "The SWAT team had their own doctors and when they entered into the critical care room, they saw that my client's son was not brain dead because he was making eye contact, was following their commands and they were completely amazed at this," Smith said.
During the standoff, the elder Pickering said his son squeezed his hand three or four times on command, with the SWAT team present to witness it. It was that moment that shifted everything.
The Aftermath
George Pickering II surrendered and was charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. One charge was later dropped and the other reduced to a state jail felony. He was released in December of that year after serving 11 months.
His son, George Pickering III, made a complete recovery. The two now co-own an electrical engineering business and built their own home together.
George III has been direct about how he sees it. "There was a law broken, but it was broken for all the right reasons. I'm here now because of it."
