Texas Mother Forced Healthy Son Through Surgeries While Working at Feeding Tube Company

MOTHER ARRESTED FOR SUBJECTING HER HEALTHY SON TO SURGERIES AND A WHEELCHAIR TO RAISE MONEY ON GOFUNDME

Texas Mother Forced Healthy Son Through Surgeries While Working at Feeding Tube Company

A Texas mother who worked at a company specializing in feeding tube patients forced her healthy son through multiple unnecessary surgeries and confined him to a wheelchair he didn't need.

The elaborate medical deception unraveled when teachers and medical staff began documenting what they actually observed versus what Kaitlyn Laura claimed about her son's condition.

Laura was arrested by the Tarrant County Sheriff's Office in March after an investigation into claims of medical abuse. She faces multiple charges including injury to a child and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The boy's teacher reported in October that he could eat solid food and moved around campus without his gait trainer or wheelchair.

Video Evidence Exposed the Deception

Investigators reviewed video footage showing Laura telling staff her son refused all foods, but the recordings captured no such behavior from the child.

When staff stopped the tube feedings, the boy ate all his meals by mouth without difficulty for three consecutive days. He gained weight eating French toast, pancakes, chicken, quesadillas, rice, fries, and pasta.

Laura had worked in home health at a company in Granbury that specialized in patients with feeding tubes, according to the child's father.

Multiple Fundraising Accounts Created

Authorities discovered at least three separate GoFundMe accounts Laura had created to raise money for her son's supposed medical care.

The case exposed gaps in the system designed to protect children from medical abuse. Medical staff at Cook Children's forwarded their concerns to Fort Worth Police, who didn't investigate and instead referred the case to Glen Rose Police.

Child Protective Services closed their case without removing the victim from Laura's custody.

Child Now Walking and Thriving

Sheriff Bill Waybourn stated the child is flourishing with his foster family. "He's walking. It's just incredible, which is incredible evidence in itself, that this mother was manipulating the situation."

Laura was ordered to have no contact with her son or any child under 17. A recorded jail phone call captured the child saying "Hi mommy, I miss you" and Laura replying "Hi baby, I miss you."

The sheriff noted the permanent damage: "There are scars on his body from those surgeries that weren't necessary, and he's going to have to be told, Why are they here?"

Medical child abuse remains without specific criminal laws in the United States, though Tarrant County has convicted 11 women of medical child abuse since 2009.
